Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy: Harnessing Energy Flow for Healing and Transformation

This starts with a premise that you may or may not agree with, which is this: human beings are not a physical, fixed object in this apparent physical reality. We are multidimensional, contain shifting perspectives, and beliefs. Studies show memory is not fixed; as soon as you start to recall memories, they change. So where is the memory? And where are our beliefs? Quantum science is now deeply supported by what those of us in the healing world have known for millenia, or: ALFT (a long fucking time).

Which is to say, the nature of a human being is not a fixed physical reality. We are animated by flows of energy that are ever shifting and changing. We as humans throughout a lifetime are changing. Think about who you were at 3 years old. 8. 18. Compare that to who you are now. I look back at past versions of myself and think “I’m not even the same person (thankfully)!”

I don’t believe the same things I used to. I see myself evolving and growing (and sometimes there’s the illusion of “devolving” or “contracting”, depending on what is flowing through in any particular life phase).

In the language of Chinese medicine, the life force is known as qi.

In the biodynamic craniosacral world, it’s referred to as varying “tides”.

In TCM, as in BCST, the practitioner uses deep listening to notice where the energy has become stagnant or fixed, and supports the body to unwind that fixation and let it return back to its original flowing health.

Disease is stagnation and fixation. Anything can stagnate: emotion, thoughts, beliefs, as well as the physical body. The fixation shows up in the bodymind as anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, headaches or any number of body aches and pains.

There’s something quite empowering in looking at a human life in that way; full of energy flows. It becomes easier to know that you can change if you know that things are not as fixed as we think they are.

If you can see yourself as a multidimensional being rather than as one fixed self, It’s easier to trust in the way that things ebb and flow. You can trust that when things are not going well, that it is a phase and that it can and will shift. And conversely, it becomes easier to release the tight grip we have on the good stuff, knowing and trusting that things will flow and change, and then come back around. It’s a good practice, even if the execution is a little bumpy.

Although humans crave certainty, one thing that’s clear is that life is going to give us anything but that. Spiritual practices such as meditation and supportive modalities like biodynamic craniosacral therapy and coaching can provide tools to make it easier (maybe even more invigorating!) to ride the waves of life.
